Assassin’s Creed Timeline

Assassin’s Creed is one of the largest and most popular franchises in the world. Most people are familiar with the games, but a lot of people aren’t aware that there are actually books, films, and mini-series in the franchise as well, that make up the overall Assassin’s Creed timeline and universe. There are a lot of installments in the franchise, and trying to piece together which one fits where can be difficult. But we’ve done exactly that! In this article, we’re going to break down every single entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, in chronological order

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey begins with the battle for Thermopylae that was fought between the Persians and the Spartans. King Leonidas, the Spartan army’s leader, wins the battle but is soon informed that the Persians have located the mountain path. In the present, Leonidas’ spear has been found, and it contains DNA that can activate Animus. The memory begins with the Misthios as a child, and after he is thrown from a mountain, he flees to Kephallonis. The action picks up from there.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins – Desert Oath

This installment of the Assassin’s Creed series, which takes place in Egypt in 70BC, is a book. It follows the story of an assassin that roams the desert in search of the last members of an ancient Medjay order so that he can eradicate his lineage and end the Order once and for all. If you are a fan of the video game series and want to learn more about the Assassin’s Creed Universe through the books, then this is the place to start.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

Set in 49 BC, this game is set in Ancient Egypt during the time of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. The main character for this game is Bayek, the last of the Medjay, an ancient order of Pharaohs. It is the same order that the character in the book we mentioned previously was trying to eradicate. He was clearly unsuccessful, as there is still one member of the Order left. The game features some beautiful graphics and visuals.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

As you may have already guessed, this game is set in the Viking era. It takes place in 873, where the war and overpopulation that plagues Norway leads Eivor to take his Viking clan on a mission in an attempt to expand their territory by invading Anglo-Saxon England. It is the latest installment in the video game series and features some of the most stunning graphics we’ve ever seen from an Assassin’s Creed game. Not to mention that playing a Viking assassin is extremely fun.

Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles

The Third Crusade took place in 1190, and that is the same time in which this portable console game takes place. The crusaders were part of an intense struggle to control the Holy City of Jerusalem. This spin-off addition to the Assassin’s Creed series focuses mostly on combat and the fighting element that is present in all of the games, so if you enjoyed battling it out in the other games, you’re going to love Altair’s Chronicles.

Here we have the very first installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and the first game that was ever released. Desmond Miles is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries so that he can be part of the Animus project, which is as mysterious as ever. Desmond is used to access the memories of his ancestor, Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, who was part of the Brotherhood of Assassins in 1191, and who fought for control of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade.

Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines

Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines is another spin-off game that takes place during the Third Crusade for the Holy City of Jerusalem. During Autumn of 1191, Altair learns about the plans that the Templars have to move to Cyprus, and he decides to do everything he can to try to stop them. This is another action-packed game, and provides more detail to the timeline, as well as more information regarding Altair. A great game for dedicated fans of the series.

This is a mini-series, which is available to watch on YouTube for free! This series focuses on Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an assassin living in Italy during the Renaissance of the 15th century. A number of the games in the Assassin’s Creed series also follow Ezio, and to some fans, those were the best games of all. This series aims to provide more information about the Assassin’s Creed universe, so it’s great for dedicated fans.

This cute little spin-off game is available for play on both Android and iOS mobile devices. The story of this Assassin’s Creed game is set during the Spanish Inquisition that occurred in the 15th century. It features graphics and an art style that we’ve never seen from an Assassin’s Creed game before and makes for a fun diversion from the main installments in the series. If you’re looking for a cutesy, killing-frenzy game, then look no further.

Here’s another spin-off game that is set during the Renaissance. In the year 1491, while searching for the Apple of Eden, Ezio, who we mentioned before, is contacted by Antonio de Magianis regarding a situation that is connected to Christopher Columbus. This game is available, interestingly, for both the Nintendo DS and iOS mobile devices. It’s the perfect game for Assassin’s Creed fans to take along with them on a long trip to keep busy, with plenty of fighting and killing action.

Assassin’s Creed: The Movie

Still set in the Renaissance period, we have the first film of this list. The Assassin’s Creed film takes place in Andalusia, in the year 1492. This is the time of the War of Granada, where Aguilar de Nerha becomes a member of the Brotherhood of Assassins and is given the task of protecting the Prince of Granada, Ahmed, from the Templars that wish to kill him. It’s a fun watch and is an excellent resource for dedicated fans of the series.

In this installment of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the player assumes Desmond’s role and is invited to take a trip through the memories of his ancestor, Ezio Auditore de Firenze. He travels to Italy during the middle of the 15th century, where he encounters all sorts of problems. This is one of the most beloved games in the series and is considered by many to be the best Assassin’s Creed game ever made. Do you agree?

This is an interesting installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise because it is a short film. It is set in the year 1500, and in it, Ezio meets with Leonardo Da Vinci, the great inventor, and artist, to learn information about Cesare Borgia, the son of the Pope. It is another fun watch, and dedicated fans of the series will find this to be quite an entertaining little movie. The animation looks similar to that of the games.

This is another spin-off game for mobile iOS and Android devices. It is set two years after the short film and takes place in the city of Monteriggioni, in which a group of Borgia mercenaries is located. A new conspiracy is revealed, and it is up to the player to solve it and put an end to it. As you may have already guessed, the mobile games are not very popular, but if you are a fan of Assassin’s Creed, they can be quite enjoyable.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Here we have another mainline game in the series. Set in the middle of 1506, the focus is still placed on the Borgia, and there is an attempt to return the city of Rome to its former glory. This is one of the most popular Assassin’s Creed games and is beloved by many fans. It also takes place in one of the most beautiful settings and emphasizes the vibrancy, color, and culture of the Renaissance era. A beautiful game with a riveting storyline.

In this game, we are still following the story of Desmond Miles, Altair, and Ezio. The game begins in the city of Constantinople in 1511, and it is in this game that we start to see Ubisoft really go all out with their graphics and world design. This is where the Assassin’s Creed games started to become truly beautiful to look at and where players wanted to slow down and absorb the flourishing environment around them.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – Volume III

Volume III of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is a comic book, the first in the franchise. It is set in the year 1516, and in it, the Brotherhood of Assassins is facing some serious trouble. Their numerous battles and disputes with the Order of the Templars has left them with barely any resources, and they are now attempting to recover as much as they can before they are wiped out entirely. This is an action-packed installment, and the comic book format is a nice twist.

Assassin’s Creed: Embers

This is the second animated short film in the franchise and is considered ‘bonus content’ for Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. It is set in the year 1524, and we see an aged Ezio enjoying his life of retirement, free of killing and action. However, the mysterious Shao Hun appears to learn more about his life as an Assassin, and from there, everything changes. Once again, this short film aims to provide more insight into the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China

This spin-off game is available for the PlayStation 4, the PSVita, the Xbox One, and PC players. It is set in 1562 and follows the story of Shao Jun, who we met in the short film mentioned previously. She received training from a retired Ezio Auditore da Firenze and is now on her own mission, which takes place, as the name suggests, in China. It is a unique and mystical setting that will be refreshing to many fans of the series.

Here we have another Assassin’s Creed comic. Setting Sun takes place in 1535 and follows the story of Charlotte De La Cruz as she enters the world of the Brotherhood of Assassins. She finds herself in the middle of the famous Inca Empire in 1535. This action-packed comic features some beautiful drawings, and it’s nice to see a female lead role in one of the installments in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. A great read for fans of the series and a must-have for comic book collectors.

Assassin’s Creed Volume I: Trial By Fire

We once again follow the story of Charlotte De La Cruz. She takes another deep dive into the genetic memories of her ancestor, Tom Stoddard, and the story is set all the way back in 1692. This is another great comic for fans to read, and we highly recommend that comic book collectors pick up this installment to add to their collection. We already have a pretty detailed picture of the Assassin’s Creed universe, but we’re only halfway there.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

This installment in the Assassin’s Creed game series is set during the Golden Age of Piracy. In it, Desmond Miles has died, but his genetic memories live on, and so does the story. This game follows the story of Edward Kenway, a pirate from the 18th century. He is father to Haytham Kenway and Grandfather of Ratonhnhake Ton. This is one of the most action-packed games in the series, and you are even able to command your own pirate ship.

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates

As you may have already guessed, this game is also set during the Golden Age of Piracy. It takes place in the 18th century, and its story is parallel to that of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black flag. If you couldn’t get enough of the pirate action from the first game, then this spin-off game is bound to give you all of the seafaring, plundering action that you could ever ask for. It’s available for iOS and Android.

Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken

We arrive at another book in the franchise, which is set during the Seven-Year War. We met Haytham Kenway in 1735. He’s a young man that learned to defend himself from a very young age after he and his family were brutally attacked. He is taken in by a mysterious tutor and becomes one of the most lethal assassins in the world. This is a fun and entertaining read, and while it doesn’t provide that much lore, it is still a good book for fans of the series.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Freedom Cry

This is an expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and is set in 1737, where piracy is still very much alive and well. The game takes place in the Caribbean Sea and follows the story of Adewale, who is trying to sabotage the Order of the Templars – a recurring theme that we’ve seen in a number of previous games. This is quite a fun expansion and adds quite a bit of content to the base game for players to enjoy.

Assassin’s Creed: Rogue

In this main installment in the series of games, we follow the story of Shay Patrick Corman in 1752. He is a new recruit for the Order of Assassins and was trained by Achilles Davenport. During the course of the game, he is on a mission to find some important manuscripts and artifacts for the Order of Assassins while also trying to fend off the Templars and prevent them from capturing members of the Order.

Seems strange to cover this game so late, doesn’t it? Assassin’s Creed III follows the life of an Assassin from the 18th century, during the American Colonial War. His name is Ratonhnhake Ton, but he is more simply known as Connor. This is another beautiful game, and the setting is mostly snowy and frigid, providing a silent, almost eerie atmosphere to the entire game. This is one of the most popular Assassin’s Creed games out there and for good reason.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

This spin-off game follows the story of another assassin living in the time of the 18th century. It is set during the same time as the previous game on this list. Her name is Aveline de Grandpre, who, amongst a number of other things, is trying to free the slaves that have been indoctrinated and forced to work by the Order of the Templars. The Templars are a long-time enemy of the assassins, which is where the conflict comes in.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity

Set during the French Revolution in 1776, this game takes place in Versailles and follows Arno Dorian, who is the son of a French nobleman. He meets Elise De La Serre, who is the daughter of the Grand Master of the Order of the Templars. After his father is murdered, Arno is captured by the Grandmaster, who is aware that Arno’s father was an assassin. This is another stunning game, and the French setting makes for some beautiful environments.

This is a standalone mission for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It is set in the year 1784 and once again follows the story of Aveline de Grandpre, who travels to Rhode Island at Connor’s request. Her mission is to find Patience Gibbs, who is a slave that was able to escape, and who attempts to recruit her to the Order of Assassins. This is a great standalone for those who are looking for even more content from Black Flag.

It’s a unique twist on the franchise and one that all fans should consider reading.

Another mainline game for the series, Syndicate, is set during the final stages of the Industrial Revolution in 1868. The Brotherhood of Assassins is virtually extinct. The Twins Evie and Jacob Frye locate a city that is under the control of the Order of the Templars, and the Church and Monarchy are losing their power. The Victorian Era makes for a dark, enchanting backdrop for this action-packed game filled with unique features.

Assassin’s Creed: Jack the Ripper

This is an expansion for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and puts a nice twist on the original game. 20 years after the events of the base game, Jack the Ripper began his reign of terror that left the streets of London in shock and even gave the Brotherhood of Assassins a run for their money. This is an incredibly fun expansion and provides a great twist on the franchise as a whole.

It’s a great addition to any book collection, especially for those who collect the Assassin’s Creed books.

He plans to infiltrate the Tsar of Russia’s home! A riveting game that all fans should play.

This comic book is set in the year 1927. The protagonist, a young Darius Gift, is given his first mission from the former Order of the Templars, as well as an opportunity to clear his family’s name. This is a great story of desperation and action and once again provides more insight into the Order of the Templars – the long-time enemy of the Brotherhood of Assassins.

This book is set in a more modern era. New assassins are placed at the center of the action during the Spanish Civil War as they attempt to recover a precious artifact. This is one of the least popular installments in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out. Hardcore fans will enjoy this book for its worldbuilding and writing.

Assassin’s Creed: Conspiracies

This comic book is set in 1943 and takes place during the Second World War. The protagonist is an assassin that gets himself involved in the atomic bomb race. This is a fantastic twist on the franchise, and the unique WWII setting acts as a nice backdrop for all of the action. The art is beautiful, and the writing is also extremely well done.

This book tells the story of Tomo Sakagawa, who is a member of the Japanese division of the Brotherhood of Assassins. It is set during the Vietnam War, and it is packed full of action.
