While most of the world still favors traditional weddings, themed weddings are becoming increasingly popular. The more we break from romantic convention, the more people are inclined to celebrate their love in a way that is special and unique to them.
There’s something truly romantic about two people proving that they are both on the same offbeat page and have some quirks in common. These themed weddings are often super fun, so let’s take a look at some of the strangest but coolest themed weddings people have had.
The Little Mermaid
Two people were married in 2011 and did it dressed as Prince Eric and Princess Ariel. They even had a stuffed Flounder toy at the aisle to bear witness to the happiest day of their lives.
The bride’s father walked her down the aisle dressed up as King Triton, and the pre-wedding photos show the bride combing her long, bright red hair with a fork. That’s dedication!
Harry Potter
Harry Potter is a classic, and one couple spent $65,000 in 2016 on an elegant Harry Potter-themed wedding. The aisle was even lined with pages from ‘spellbooks’.
The seating assignments for the guests were fastened to Quidditch hoops, and the programs were printed in the style of The Daily Prophet, which is the newspaper in the world of Harry Potter.
Costco
In 2014, a couple married each other by walking down the frozen food aisle at Costco. Well, it’s still an aisle, and while it might sound strange, it’s actually quite a sweet story.
Costco is where the couple first met. For the record, Costco usually does not allow weddings, but the store gave the couple special permission after swooning over their sweet story.
Minions
You must have seen this one coming. Despicable Me’s introduction of the Minions took the world by storm, and ever since, the small yellow friends have been absolutely everywhere.
So it only makes sense that a couple in 2015 married each other in a wedding themed around the Minions movie.
The cake was Minion-themed, and little stuffed Minions decorated the tables.
This is another case of a wedding that seems strange but is actually pretty sweet. A couple met on Twitter in 2013, and they became friends for about a year before things got romantic.
Given that Twitter was their Cupid, the couple incorporated the social medium into almost every aspect of their wedding. Twitter birds decorated the cake, tables, menus, and more.
Bacon
In 2013, a couple won a contest in which they were rewarded with a marriage at the San Diego Big Bite Bacon Festival. Doesn’t that sound like a bacon-lover’s dream?
Bouquets were made of bacon, the cake was topped with bacon, the aisle carpet featured bacon strips, and guests wore bacon vests. There was pretty much bacon everywhere.
Alice in Wonderland
Returning to more believable themes, a couple who met in a tearoom decided that their wedding would be an ode to Alice in Wonderland.
The reception was whimsical, to say the least, and took inspiration from the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
There were signs that read ‘This Way’, vintage pocket watches and teapots, tables covered in grass, and pink and purple flowers to complete the ethereal theme.
The Walking Dead
In 2016, a bride and groom married one another in a ceremony themed after The Walking Dead.
They hired a makeup artist to transform the groom, the bride, and each of their guests into zombies! The couple even shot a video where the guests chased them around.
This honestly sounds like a super fun wedding. Who wouldn’t want to chase the bride and groom around dressed as a zombie?
The Lord of the Rings
In 2013, a groom forked out $10 million to have an enchanted wedding amongst the towering redwoods of the Big Sur in California.
Each of the 364 guests received a costume to wear inspired by The Lord of the Rings.
Petals, fairy lights, and garlands were laid about everywhere to make the venue resemble the elven kingdom of Rivendell, and there were even fur-pelted seats and beds at the reception.
Twilight
The bride and groom decided to transform into Bella Swan and Edward Cullen for this wedding. Bold wine was served in small glasses, giving the appearance of blood.
The couple’s old-school suitcases had tags on them that read ‘Mr. and Mrs. Cullen’, and there were even jars filled with pins that read, ‘A vampire is for life’, ‘Bite me’, and ‘Life sucks’.
Disney
Why choose just one Disney movie for your wedding theme when you can pay homage to all of them?
A couple that got engaged at Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle thought the same thing. Each table had its own theme.
Cinderella’s table included a pumpkin carriage, the Little Mermaid table had some of the items Ariel kept, and the Snow White table had some dastardly apples.
Star Wars
Many people have had Star Wars weddings over the years, but it’s safe to say that some people are more dedicated and take it way further than others.
And why wouldn’t they? It’s their special day.
One couple had Darth Vader officiate the wedding, and he also acted out an entire scene in which he had to fight off anyone that had an objection to the nuptials.
Taco Bell
I know, right? In 2017, one couple won the Love and Tacos Contest and became the first couple to marry one another inside the chapel in Taco Bell’s flagship Las Vegas restaurant.
The venue was filled with Taco Bell décor, the bride had a sauce packet bouquet, and the groom’s boutonniere was made of the same thing.
Tacos were, of course, the main item for dinner.
Game of Thrones
One couple, back in 2014, decided to theme their wedding based on Game of Thrones, to honor their favorite show.
They even had an acoustic guitar version of the main theme playing during the procession.
The ‘Rains of Castamere’ theme played as the bride walked down the aisle, and the party favors read ‘Lady Valentina and Lord Jesse’. The tables were also named after a different house.
Delta Airlines
This is definitely one of the weirder wedding themes on this list.
A couple had their wedding themed after Delta Airlines in Tennessee, since the airline played a big role in their former long-distance relationship.
Wedding guests were welcomed with first-class amenity kits, and the couple walked down the aisle on a branded airline mat. The food was even served on Delta flatware.
Toy Story
This couple dressed up as Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story for their Illinois wedding and shared their first dance to ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’, one of the film’s most iconic songs.
The entire wedding party also wore outfits inspired by Disney films. Woody’s parents dressed up as King Triton and Ursula, while Buzz’s parents dressed up as a pirate and Tinkerbell.
Puppies
What could be cuter than puppies? The answer is simple: nothing. That’s why one bride decided to have her bridesmaids hold puppies rather than bouquets for her wedding in 2017.
The resulting pictures went viral almost immediately. What’s even better, the decision served a fantastic cause since all of the puppies were adopted after the wedding. Cute!
This Is Us
If you’ve ever seen NCS’ hit show This Is Us, then you know that Rebecca and Jack are the ultimate couple goals.
So it makes sense that at least one couple would theme their wedding after the show.
One couple used their semblance to the main couple to host a wedding that closely resembled the wedding on the show. The ensuing photos went totally viral, causing everyone to shed a tear.
World Cup
If there’s a football fan in your life, then you know how obsessive they can be over the sport.
One couple got married during the world cup in 2018, and they themed the wedding after Argentina’s team.
All of the decorations were white and blue, and the wedding cake was shaped like a soccer ball. It even included stitching to make it look realistic.
Magic
Who doesn’t want their special day to be magical? Well, when your groom is an actual magician, you can expect more than a little magic at your wedding.
The Internet had its mind blown by the first dance of this couple, of which the groom is a magician, at their wedding in 2015.
The groom actually levitates during the song.
Lego
Lego is definitely one of the most famous and popular kids’ toys out there, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed by adults as well.
This couple decided to theme their entire wedding based on the colorful blocks.
Back in 2015, one couple’s wedding cake, which was made entirely out of edible Lego bricks, won them plenty of love from the Internet and went viral pretty quickly.
The Princess Bride
A couple decided to have their 2012 wedding inspired by The Princess Bride. They dressed up for the parts, and were also wed on a “wooden” path.
They stuck swords in the ground around the aisle and also exchanged vows under a fairytale banner that read, ‘Joined by the bonds of love.’
Whole Foods
Okay, we’re getting weird again. One couple first got to know each other at Whole Foods when they first started dating.
So it makes sense that they’d dedicate their wedding to the grocery store.
They decided to marry one another in the flower aisle of a Whole Foods after getting engaged just a year earlier.
Books
In 2017, one couple married each other in the Rare Books Room at the Strand bookstore in New York City.
They said that the Strand embodies all of the things they love about their relationship.
The space is intimate and warm and is full of stories, so it only seems appropriate to celebrate an important chapter of your life in there.
Peaky Blinders
This is a bit of a strange theme, especially considering the themes of gang violence present within the show itself.
But that didn’t stop one couple from having a Peaky Blinders wedding in 2017.
They were married in a moor surrounded by guests wearing caps, tweed, and smoking cigars. Sounds pretty cool!
Summary
Who says that you have to have a traditional, all-white wedding?
If you want to theme your wedding after your favorite thing, go for it! These people prove that there’s really nothing stopping you.
